Neurotology

What Is Neurotology?

Neurotology is a subspecialty of otolaryngology focused on neurological-related and inner ear concerns. Neurotologists are trained to operate on the sections of the brain and nervous system that control hearing and balance.

What Disorders Does a Neurotologist Treat?

While ENT physicians specialize in a wide range of conditions, neurotologists focus on complex ear diseases and disorders of the head, neck and skull base. They frequently treat:

  • Hearing loss that requires implantable devices: Devices like hearing implants and bone conductive hearing aids are often recommended for patients with severe hearing loss from inner ear damage.
  • Skull base tumors: These tumors form along the base of the skull or directly below it.
  • Acoustic neuromas: Also known as vestibular schwannomas, these noncancerous tumors grow on the nerve between the brain and inner ear.
  • Balance disorders: These conditions result in dizziness and may be the result of an impact to the inner ear or brain.
