Otology

What Is Otology?

Otology is a subspecialty of otolaryngology focused on the anatomy and physiology of the ear. While ENT physicians treat a wide range of disorders, otologists offer specialized care for ear conditions. Otologists have completed additional fellowship training and focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the ear and conditions affecting its anatomical structures.

What Disorders Does an Otologist Treat?

Otologists provide advanced care for complex auditory or vestibular concerns. They often perform surgical procedures.

Otologists frequently treat:

  • Complex ear diseases: These include Ménière’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear that causes dizziness, and cholesteatoma, an abnormal collection of skin cells inside the ear.
  • Tumors in or near the ear: Tumors may be cancerous or benign and can result in hearing loss, numbness and facial paralysis if left untreated.
  • Chronic ear infections: Also known as chronic Otis media, this refers to a persistent infection or inflammation of the middle ear.
  • Ear reconstruction: A surgical procedure that can change the shape, proportion or position of your ears.
  • Barotrauma: This refers to physical damage resulting from sudden or significant changes in pressure.
